About Us

Every one of us as scientists or STEM professionals can relate an instance or two in our lives that was transformative and influenced our future paths. Perhaps it was a particular experience, an outstanding teacher, or even an interaction with someone in the broader community that shaped our career paths.

The research is clear and the empirical evidence established: when a professional or expert shares their experience and passion with students, impressions are made which can be life changing.

Not only do students and classrooms gain insight and enthusiasm when we take the time to share with them, we as professionals also benefit. Outreach can be very gratifying, seeing the excitement and curiosity of our students first-hand, but it also cultivates our professional development and enriches our career and personal experience. If you are a scientist or STEM professional, consider joining our Roster!

Currently we work on STEM outreach in Arizona, concentrated mainly around the Phoenix metropolitan area, as well as the greater Rio Grand Valley area of southern Texas (McAllen, Brownsville, Harlingen, South Padre Island, and surrounding areas). As our effort grows and we can expand our mission, we hope to add STEM professionals to our roster who are available in many new areas and states!

Our Directors

Michael D. Thomas

Growing up on a farm in the Midwest, Mike had a natural interest in animals and nature. While venturing into architecture and home construction, he also enlisted in the Army National Guard as Infantry, earning an Honorable Discharge and some money to head to college. The first of 5 farm kids to attend university, he began college with no real direction, but quickly chose a major in Biology, with an interest in the origin of life. This led to studies in space exploration and astrobiology while finishing up his B.S. at Purdue University. After pharmaceutical positions with Bayer and Pfizer, he started Microbiology graduate studies at the University of Hawaii (to later include "minors" in marine biology, SCUBA, and surfing). Leaving the Islands to pursue Doctoral work at Arizona State led to research in geomicrobiology and further interests in astrobiology. Teaching Biology at the community colleges, Mike has also acted as a science curriculum developer/editor for middle/high school students, with a focus on integrating Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards.

Mike taught at the college level, and has been doing outreach for K-12 students, since 1999. As a PADI Master SCUBA Diver Trainer and business owner, he also enjoys teaching new students how to SCUBA dive, sharing his passion for the marine environment and science in general. As a father of 3, he enjoys sharing science and taking his family on adventures. With a strong interest in STEM outreach in the classroom for K-12 students, Mike is the Founder of the SEAS Alliance.

Kevin studied and taught at the college level in areas of Mineralogy and Petrology at ASU, and has also taught Oceanography at the community colleges.

Kevin loves to share his sense of adventure, and a passion for the scientific method with those around him. He is naturally driven to contribute knowledge in science and STEM areas to the next generation. He has been a Project Geologist/Scientist at AMTECH Associates, L.L.C. in Scottsdale, Arizona since 2011.

James has a passion for the outdoors and science and enjoys sharing that with others. He is passionate about demonstrating the benefits of exploring STEM for the next generation.

Adriana Martinez

Growing up between the two worlds of urban Texas and coastal Mexico, Adriana Martinez’s young mind almost immediately latched onto art as a means of expressing the beautiful experiences and environments she encountered. Her tools back then were crayons. Those crayons soon evolved into a scholarship, and then into a life path.

Adriana has remained true to her love of art and native wonders ever since - a heartfelt pursuit which has led her all around the world from Texas to San Miguel de Allende to Florence, Italy; from Italy to Spain and Morocco; from Europe back to Mexico, dramatically steeped in its own complex web of histories and rich, resplendent cultures.

A graduate from The Institute for Art and Restoration, Palazzo Spinelli in Florence Italy, Adriana is a multifaceted artist working on indigenous ethnic based series and private commissions. She has shown her work in many galleries in Mexico, Spain, Italy and the US. She currently works with organizations such as Free Arts AZ, West Valley Arts and ALAC and different school districts working with different ages to facilitate art workshops for teachers, staff, children and adults for the purpose of art education and well being. In her teaching work she has taken a variety of subjects including sustainability, creative aging, refugee funnel programs, trauma informed creativity, cultural sensitivity, portraiture and social emotional awareness.Through the use of painting and drawing, creative movement and breathing, and arts integrated lessons her students are able to synthesize key ideas, cultivate emotional and social skills, and become better collaborators all while having fun!

Adriana is a teaching artist and brings a valuable artist's perspective to STEM and how art and the humanities are intertwined and complementary with science and STEM fields. She is helping to develop teaching methodologies and curriculum which help expand our STEM outreach to align with STEAM.
